“I need your help.”
“It's nice to see you again too,” Ivor remarked with a laugh.
“With this.” Grimluk held up the page. Ivor took the drawing, his attention caught, and inspected it. “The Quinn boy, Nicholas, said he would occasionally come to while drawing strange things. Most of them look more like a child's scribblings, but this one, obviously, does not. I only recognize a few of the symbols on it though. I was hoping you would know what it was and what it might be for or might have a book that could show the way.”
Ivor nodded. “You're definitely sharper than the other two,” Ivor mused. “I don't even remember them asking if anyone had actually seen a demon wandering the town. But sure, I can look it over. You're welcome to stay or you can leave the drawing with me and come back tomorrow.”
“I'll leave it with you,” Grimluk said with a nod. “Maybe you can help with something else too...”
“What's that?”
“Selbie.”
“Ah, our right honorable mayor. What about him?”
“Do you know him well?”
“Hm, not well enough to be much help. You've seen his behavior for yourself.”
Grimluk's throat rumbled in response. “My gut says there's something more going on with him. Beyond his clearly abundant concern for the town's continued existence. Did you hear about the 'test' he pushed on me?”
“Truthfully, I was sound asleep but I heard he made you fight a ghoul.”
“It wasn't a ghoul. At least, not one I'd ever seen. It was the elf, Ald'n, the last hunter. He was dead, yes, and he even reckoned that fact, but he didn't look dead for very long. All the decay disappeared and he healed from any blow I gave. Put my knife through his skull and he shrugged it off and pulled it back out. And if that weren't bad enough, Selbie was completely in control. I suspect through the strange amulet he had on. Ald'n wanted to take a swing at him and the good mayor halted him.”
Ivor stroked his beard. “Amulet, hmm? I don't know anything about it but I do know that it has to be recent. Selbie's never had anything like that for as long as I've known him. I suppose it's possible he's been hiding it but I doubt it. When you've worked in magic long enough, you get a feel for it. I'd wager you understand that all too well though, am I right?”
“Perks of the job. I guess I need to get some more answers then.”
“I certainly hope to have at least one for you when you return.”
Grimluk gave the old magician's shoulder a pat. “I'm grateful for the help.” Ivor nodded. “I'll be back tomorrow. If you stumble over anything concerning amulets that make ghouls, be sure to save that as well.”
Ivor bowed his head. “Hopefully fortune smiles on us.”
Grimluk bowed his head in return before heading back out into town. He stood outside for a few minutes, taking in the air and ordering his thoughts. He needed answers but he'd have to plan smartly to get them.
